Mobile Mystery Dinners: A Legacy of Laughter, Intrigue, and Community Entertainment

Mobile Mystery Dinners, LLC was founded by Virginia McKean, a long-time supporter of historic preservation and community arts in Mobile, Alabama. The company traces its roots to the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, where Ms. McKean served as manager for over a decade. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in fundraising and operations for the nonprofit property, which operates under the umbrella of the Exploreum of Mobile.

In 2002, Ms. McKean launched The Mansion of Mystery: Murder at the Bragg, a unique and engaging series of interactive dinner theater performances. Designed as a fundraising initiative, the productions were entirely volunteer-led, with all proceeds directly benefiting the mansion. Quickly gaining popularity, the murder mysteries were staged up to 12 times per month, carefully scheduled on evenings when the venue was otherwise unbooked to maximize revenue.

After stepping down in October 2007, Ms. McKean expected the productions to continue. However, the Exploreum chose to discontinue the program. In response to public demand—especially from businesses and individuals who had previously attended or hosted events—Ms. McKean established Mobile Mystery Dinners, LLC later that year.

The company found a home at the Carnival Museum of Mobile.  From December 2007 through 2016, Mobile Mystery Dinners thrived at the museum before relocating to Ms. McKean’s private, special event venue, The Azalea Manor on Dauphin Street. The Azalea Manor hosted performances until October 2019.

Today, Mobile Mystery Dinners is proudly headquartered at the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel (64 South Water Street, Mobile, AL 36602), where it continues to offer a wide range of entertainment options. From public performances to private events, the company specializes in interactive mystery shows tailored for corporate gatherings, fundraisers, holiday parties, and special occasions.
